LESSON #7 - Installing the Paclink AGW program, configuring a connect channel for Telnet Client, and sending an e-mail through WL2K from Outlook Express (OE)

Estimated Time: 20-30 minutes after reading the introductory information.

Paclink AGW links the Paclink Post Office (local server) to the outside world through AGW Packet Engine (AGW PE) for RF links via packet radio, or through a telnet link over the internet. In either case, the ultimate target for the connection is a WL2K PMBO. Connections are made by creating Paclink AGW "Channels" which are onfigured for connect scripts to reach the targets. Each channel only links to a single target. Many channels may be established, saved, and recalled for use when needed. Channels are assigned a priority 1-5 so that in automatic mode connections are tried to targets in priority order. If one fails the next is tried, etc.

NOTE: Those with Win95/98 will not be able to do this lesson, but need to be familiar with the information.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Win2000 or XP computer on the internet with Post Office installed and Outlook Express or compliant e-mail client configured for the Base Post Office account, and the Paclink AGW installer executable downloaded during Lesson #2. The file name is 'Paclink AGW 1.2.3 Install.exe' or later.

OPERATOR REQUIREMENTS:

Current Amateur Radio license; Completion of Lesson #6.

Pre-installation notes:

(1) If you have a previous version of Paclink AGW that is earlier than version 1.2.0.0 (Oct 11, 2005) you must first use START- Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs and REMOVE Paclink AGW. (Your previous local configurations will be saved.) Check the existing version of Paclink AGW by clicking on the Paclink AGW main window: FILES/About.

(2) Unless you have had a lot of experience unzipping install.exe files, it is suggested you create a new folder on the C: drive named HOLD - or something EMPTY you can remember - to be able to find the unzipped files during installation!

INSTALLING PACLINK AGW

With Post Office and Outlook Express NOT RUNNING and with the computer on the internet-

1. START/RUN or double click on Paclink AGW Install.exe. This is a Winzip self extractor.

2. At the Winzip window - use BROWSE and unzip these files to c:/hold.

CLOSE the Winzip window.

3. START/RUN - browse to c:/hold/setup.exe and click OK, then at the first install screen click NEXT.

4. Select install folder window - take default install folder and click on EVERYONE then NEXT and take defaults through FINISH.

5. At the Desktop double click on the Paclink AGW Icon - watch for the thin update window to appear then disappear, unless there is an update that requires your approval. NOTE: March 4, 2006 Do not approve the update until further notice.

NOTE: This should also auto start Post Office which will also poll the internet for updates.

6. Paclink AGW Properties Window. Take default install location and fill in the following.

Message Delivery - take defaults

Automatically Poll - Defaults to checked and 60 minutes.

Auto update configuration - Defaults to User Prompt @start up

AGW Packet Engine - take default

Path to AGW Packet Engine - Take default. (Do not change if you have AGW PE already installed.)

Click on UPDATE when all fields have been reviewed.

A window will remind you if AGW PE has not been installed. If so click OK and that should take you to...-

7. Paclink AGW Window (might be full of information - not to worry.)

Click on Files/Channels

Paclink AGW Channels

Channel- Click on Telnet

Channel Name -highlight the field and type over it with

"'PMBOCALL' TELNET"

where 'PMBOCALL' is call of one of the PMBOs that has a telnet server. For this lesson use W3EOC, KN6KB or K4CJX unless you have another favorite.

Channel Priority - 1

Channel Enabled - check

Telnet Properties (lower half of right side of window)

Remote Callsign: - CALL

Remote Telnet Host: - PMBOCALL.no-ip.com, where PMBOCALL is the callsign of the PMBO telnet server.

Remote Telnet Port: -defaults to 12001

Telnet Password: defaults to WL2KTELNETCLIENT

IP Connection: defaults to localhost.

Check all work on this window then click on ADD NEW CHANNEL and then CLOSE.

8. Paclink AGW main screen-

Click on Connect / Connect to / then the CALL Telnet channel.

Watch the screen - everything is at internet speeds so it won't take long to finish the telnet exchange.

ERROR? First thing to do is create and enable another Telnet channel to a different PMBO. (Step 7 above.) Make this new channel priority 2.

NOTE: Where more than one Paclink AGW channel is enabled, all enabled channels will be presented in the pull-down CONNECT TO list.

Using Windows Explorer delete all files from c:\hold

TESTING PACLINK AGW WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS

With Post Office and Packlink AGW both running and with small windows showing -

1. Start Outlook Express -

Create a New Mail message. (File/New/Mail message.)

If you only have one e-mail account it will be the one you generated during Lesson #5 - yourcall@winlink.org e-mail address. It is the one to use.

If you have more than one e-mail account in OE, you must select which one you want to use for this message. Do this by clicking on the pull-down arrow that is at the far right side of the From: window on the OE editor. Select the @winlink.org account for this message.

2. Set up this message To: w3eoc-5@winlink.org. Set up cc: your commercial e-mail account.

3. Subject: Lesson #7 (your call)

4. TEXT - report the following in the text:

Your call

OS

Do you have a packet TNC?

Have you installed AGW Packet Engine?

How long did this lesson require?

Include the text: *please acknowledge*

This special string triggers an automatic acknowledgement message from the Chester County RACES room. Use it as you wish for testing and checking email paths. The messages to w3eoc-5 always arrive and depart the RACES room by radio. The acknowledgement can take up to ten minutes to arrive back at your station, due to polling rates of stations along the way and other ISP delays.

5. After checking the entries, SEND the message.

Watch the Paclink AGW screen for the telnet exchange. The Post Office screen should have a reference line for the outgoing message.

REPORT: If after ten minutes to an hour or so you successfully receive the acknowlegement email from W3EOC-5 there is no further report required. Write the group list if you have any problems.
